Songs About What I’ve Learned… So Far
Mike writes music that ranges from poignant to funny, and has been compared to the clever storytelling of John Prine. He plays guitar, banjo, harmonica, ukulele, slide guitar, percussion and even a little Irish penny whistle now and then. His fun and quirky style fits equally well on the concert stage and small venues, and Mike can entertain audiences of all ages.
He started his musical career in Hawaii at the age of 7 with a ukulele and a squeaky voice. By the late 1960s he was fronting a series of “garage” bands, writing songs like “Turn Off Those Damn Amps Because Your Dad Wants To Put The Car Away!” Then, in 1969, having grown tired of having friends and money, Mike switched gears to folk music and never looked back.
Dr. Mike and the Sea Monkeys is named after a recurring character in Mike’s nationally syndicated humor column, What I’ve Learned… So Far. Dr. Mike is an advice columnist whose credentials as a counselor come from an online college of vacuum cleaner repair.
The lineup is pretty flexible from one booking to the next, but it sometimes consists of a two-man trio with Mike and drummer/vocalist/bassist Nick Spagnuolo. Sometimes Grammy Award-winning harmonica virtuoso Peter Madcat Ruth shows up for Madcat and Mike shows. Sometimes Mike finds himself on his own or with a wide range of other talented friends.
